Akhrot Giri (Walnut)
Akhrot giri is the walnut with the work already done: clean kernels, no shell, no cracking, nothing in the bin. Every gram you pay for is food. Our rate is Rs 900 for 250g, Rs 1,600 for 500g and Rs 3,000 for 1kg. Khan Dry Fruits lists its premium walnut kernels at Rs 4,000 a kilo, and farm-direct Chitrali giri sells around Rs 3,100. Ours is an everyday eating grade priced below both, which is where a staple like this belongs.
| Pack size | Price |
|---|---|
| 250g | Rs 900 |
| 500g | Rs 1,600 |
| 1kg | Rs 3,000 |
Halves, pieces, and what to expect
Giri is graded by how much of it comes out as whole halves. Perfect unbroken halves cost the most and matter only when the walnut sits on top of something. For eating, baking, akhrot ka halwa, chutneys and the winter handful, a pack of halves and honest pieces tastes identical at a kinder price, and that is the grade we pack. Walnuts are the most oil rich nut on our shelf, which is why they carry the plant omega-3 fats walnuts are known for, and why freshness is not a detail with them. A fresh kernel tastes earthy and almost sweet. A stale one tastes bitter and paints the mouth, and no discount makes that pack worth buying.
The smell test, and storage that matters
Before anything else, smell the pack. Walnut oil turns faster than almond or cashew oil, so the nose settles the question: mild and nutty is right, sharp or paint like is not. At home, keep giri airtight and in the fridge if your kitchen runs hot; it keeps far better cold than in a warm cupboard. The full shell versus giri arithmetic is worked through in our akhrot guide.
Questions we hear at the counter
Is giri better value than akhrot in shell? For eating, yes. A kilo of in-shell walnuts yields roughly half a kilo of kernels, so giri at Rs 3,000 usually beats shelling your own. In shell wins only on long storage.
How much walnut should I eat a day? A small handful, around 30 grams, a few whole kernels. Walnuts are rich food; the handful is the habit that works.
Why is some giri much more expensive? Origin and wholeness. Mountain desi giri and unbroken halves command premiums. For daily eating, the difference rarely justifies doubling the price.
