Daal Mong (Nimko)
Daal mong is the simplest thing we sell and the most expensive daal on the shelf, and both facts have the same explanation. There is nothing in the pack but yellow moong daal, soaked for a few hours, dried completely, fried until crisp and salted. No sev folded through, no heavy masala coat. When the recipe is that bare, the raw material is the flavour, and moong is the costliest of the daals we fry. The price is honest arithmetic, not a premium invented at the counter.
The taste of doing less
What you get is a clean, nutty crunch and a daal that tastes like itself. Because the seasoning stays light, daal mong is the one people reach for when they want a savoury snack that does not shout: with chai, as a topping scattered over khichdi or chaat for texture, or eaten slowly in the evening the way others eat nuts. It also carries more natural protein than the flour based lines, being almost entirely whole lentil, though it is fried and salted and should be enjoyed as a snack, not a supplement.
Price and pack sizes
| Pack | Price |
|---|---|
| Daal Mong 500g | Rs 600 |
| Daal Mong 1kg | Rs 1,200 |
The rest of the daal shelf sits at Rs 400 for 500g; the gap is the cost of moong itself in the market. The full daal family is compared in our types of nimko guide.
Keeping it crisp
Fried daal loses its crack to moisture like everything else we make. Airtight jar, dry spoon, away from steam, and it stays crisp for weeks. If it softens, a few minutes in a low oven on a tray restores most of it. Fried and packed by Wahid Nimco in Quetta since 1990, delivered across Pakistan in 3 to 5 business days.
Questions I hear most
Why does daal mong cost more than daal moth? The daal itself. Moong trades well above masoor and chana in the market, and this pack is nearly all daal with nothing cheaper padding it.
Is daal mong spicy? Barely. Salt and a light touch of spice; the daal's own flavour leads.
How do people eat it? Straight with chai, or scattered over dishes for crunch. Find it with the rest of the shelf in the nimko collection.
