Ghatiya
Ghatiya is the soft one, and in our shop it might be the most loved. Where sev is pressed into strands, ghatiya batter goes through the widest plate of the sev press and drops into the oil as short, thick pieces. The inside stays pillowy instead of turning crisp all the way through, so it crunches once and then gives. The classic seasoning is ajwain, carom seed, and you can taste it in every piece: warm, faintly peppery, unmistakably ghatiya.
The mildest seat at the table
Of everything we fry, ghatiya carries the least chilli. That is why it is the pack handed to children, to grandparents, and to the guest who says they cannot eat mirchi and then empties the bowl anyway. It is a chai time snack in the truest sense, eaten slowly, piece by piece, and across the border in Gujarat it is famous enough to be served with jalebi. The spellings gathiya and ganthiya you see on other packs are the same snack; judge it by the shape, not the name.
Price and pack sizes
| Pack | Price |
|---|---|
| Ghatiya 500g | Rs 400 |
| Ghatiya 1kg | Rs 800 |
Ghatiya sits at the same rate as our sev lines. If you want to see how it compares with its thinner cousins, I have put the three side by side in the sev and ghatiya comparison guide, and the whole family is mapped in the types of nimko guide.
Keeping ghatiya soft in the right way
Soft by design is not the same as stale. Fresh ghatiya is light and pillowy; stale ghatiya turns dense and heavy, and the smell of tired oil gives it away. Store it airtight, away from steam, and buy the size your house finishes while it is fresh. Made by Wahid Nimco in Quetta since 1990, delivered across Pakistan in 3 to 5 business days.
Questions I hear most
What is the difference between ghatiya and sev? Shape and batter. Sev is strands; ghatiya is short thick drops from a softer batter, so it stays soft inside instead of crisping through.
Is ghatiya spicy? It is the mildest nimko we make. Ajwain gives warmth; chilli stays in the background.
Which nimko is best for children? This one. Soft to chew and gentle in spice. The rest of the shelf is in the nimko collection.
