Shakarpara
Shakarpara is the box that gets put out with the tea before you have finished sitting down: small diamond shaped pieces of flour dough, fried slowly until crisp, then tossed in sugar syrup boiled to the three thread stage so each piece dries wearing a thin white coat. It has been on Pakistani tea tables for generations, and it earns its place by being cheap, durable and properly crisp. At WD Foods, shakarpara is Rs 450 for 500g and Rs 900 for 1kg, checked on 30 October 2026.
What makes a batch good
The list of ingredients fits on a matchbox: maida, ghee rubbed into the flour for the moyan, water, and sugar for the syrup. Everything is in the handling. The dough is rolled and cut into diamonds, fried on a low flame so the middle cooks through instead of staying raw under a brown coat, then coated in syrup at exactly the stage where it crystallises dry instead of staying damp. A good piece snaps with a clean crack and shows a flaky, cooked centre. A piece that bends was rushed, and the whole batch will soften within days. I have written the full making story, step by step, in our shakarpara guide.
The tea pair
On most counters, ours included, shakarpara stands next to its savoury twin, namak pare: same dough, same diamonds, salt and ajwain instead of sugar. Sweet for the children and the guests, savoury for the elders, and the household argument about which box empties first has been running for about a century. It is a sweet, plainly: a few pieces with tea is a serving, and at Rs 900 a kilo it is among the cheapest proper sweets in the country, well under bakery mithai.

Storing it
Airtight and dry, shakarpara keeps its crispness for about a month, which is why it is the travelling sweet of the region: shaadi trays, hostel parcels, luggage, it arrives exactly as it left. Humidity is the only real enemy, so keep the jar sealed and away from kitchen steam. More of the range is in our sweet snacks collection, and everything is priced in the dry fruits price list.
Questions I hear most
What is shakarpara made of? Flour dough enriched with ghee, cut into diamonds, deep fried slowly, and coated in sugar syrup that crystallises into the dry white coat as the pieces cool.
How long does it stay fresh? About a month in an airtight container in a dry place. If a batch has only slightly softened, ten minutes on a tray in a low oven can bring the snap back.
